A minimum of thirteen passengers killed and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
